Marsha P. Johnson was a fearless advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and a key figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Her tireless efforts and unwavering spirit continue to inspire generations of activists and community members. To honor her during Trans History Month and celebrate her birthday, The Queer Arts presents "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!" an immersive AR exhibit. The Media is welcomed to preview the exhibit at the media reception on Thursday, August 22 (5pm-7pm). The public is invited to experience the interactive augmented reality exhibit at The Queer Arts Center for free on Saturday, August 24 (11am-2pm). Free tickets are available at QueerArtsCenter.com

Oakland, CA – August 2024 – The Queer Arts proudly presents "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!"—an immersive augmented reality (AR) exhibit by black queer artist Kin Folkz - celebrating the life and legacy of Marsha P. Johnson, a fearless advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and a key figure in the 1969 Stonewall uprising. This groundbreaking exhibit honors her during Trans History Month and commemorates her 74th birthday.

Exhibit HighlightsAugmented Reality Experiences: Visitors will engage with AR technology to explore 3D models, animations, and historical reenactments of pivotal moments in Marsha’s life and the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Self-guided tours with virtual guides will offer audio narratives and interactive visuals.
Interactive Displays: Touchscreens will showcase key moments from Marsha's life and the broader LGBTQ+ movement, allowing visitors to dive deeper into history.
Personal Artifacts and Memorabilia: Photographs, letters, and personal items from Marsha’s life will be enhanced with AR overlays, providing additional stories and context.
Multimedia Presentations: Experience interviews, documentaries, and artistic interpretations of Marsha’s impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
Interactive Community Reflections Poem and Digital Mural: Visitors are encouraged to contribute words and phrases to a collective poem that will be integrated into a digital mural by artist Kin Folkz. This dynamic piece will evolve throughout the exhibit and be displayed on the Healing Queer Arts Center website.
Community Floral Art Installation: Visitors will create paper flowers with written sentiments and add them to a 3D mural honoring Marsha’s life, symbolizing her legacy through her iconic flower crown.
TGIJP Card-Making Activity: In collaboration with the Transgender, Gender-Variant & Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), visitors can create and send personalized cards to incarcerated trans community members, fostering solidarity and support.
